Land of the Lightning Brothers - Bungle Bungle - El Questro Station - Mitchell Falls & King Edward River Art Sites - Kalumburu Aboriginal Community - Mt Elizabeth Station - Gibb River Road to Broome.



Day 1  Darwin - Wardaman Country

At 08.00am North Australian Expeditions will collect you this morning for a 15 day, 4 wheel drive safari throughout the Kimberley region.  This tour is conducted in  Landcruiser GXL 4 wheel drive vehicles.  All meals will be supplied whilst on tour as will camping gear.

Depart Darwin and travel south to Katherine via Adelaide River and Pine Creek, we then head west.

Travel to Innesvale Station (Mengen) where you’ll meet Bill Harney, a traditional elder of the Wardaman People, who is also a very well known local character. “Born Under The Paperbark Tree” is a book written about Bill’s life.  Continue to Wardaman Country and Bill’s permanent and truly unique bush camp, where you’ll spend the night. The giant sized boab is a main feature!

Dinner tonight will be cooked on the BBQ or open fire.

Day 2  Wardaman Country

After breakfast you’ll travel by four wheel drive vehicle exploring some of the richest occupation, art and rock engraving sites to be found anywhere in the region. Your destination is the site of “The Lightning Brothers.”  These figures are of major importance to the Wardaman peoples and represent a continuation of their traditional culture. The importance of these paintings will be interpreted for you by your traditional Wardaman guide.

Day 3  Keep River National Park

After breakfast depart the land of the Lightning Brothers and continue west to Keep River National Park.

Spend this afternoon exploring Keep River Gorge (3 - 4 km walk). The gorge is approximately 3.5 km long and will take you to a water hole known as Jinumum, which is abundant with flora, fauna, fish, tortoise and a wide variety of birds.

Dinner will be cooked on the open fire or BBQ.

Day 4  Kununurra - Bungle Bungle

After breakfast we depart Keep River for Kununurra.  We have to shop in Kununurra as fresh fruit and produce are not permitted to be carried into Western Australia.

Lunch will be served prior to departing Kununurra for the Bungle Bungle ( Purnululu National Park ), a massif of stripped sandstone domes that dot the landscape.
This evening watch the sunset among the domes of the Bungles.

Dinner tonight will be served in camp.

Day 5  Bungle Bungle

Breakfast will be served in camp this morning.  A full day is spent in the Bungles. Visit Cathedral Gorge and Mini Palms.

Optional scenic helicopter flights are available today.  Cost approximately AUD $230.00 per person.

Day 6  El Questro Station

After breakfast depart for Kununurra, El Questro.  Walk / hike into the pristine pool that is 'Emma Gorge', a 30-45 minute walk that is considered moderate to difficult. Your guide will assist.

Choice of 15:00hrs Chamberlain Gorge Cruise this afternoon.

Dinner tonight will be served in camp.

Day 7  Gibb River Road - Drysdale Station

After breakfast travel to Zebedee Springs; small thermal pools situated in a pocket of lush and tropical livistonia and pandanus palms. Depart Zebedee Springs for the Gibb River Road.

Dinner tonight will be cooked on the BBQ or over an open fire.

Overnight: Camping - Miners Pool, Drysdale Station

Day 8  King Edward River

This morning we depart camp for the King Edward River area. The King Edward River and Mitchell Plateau areas are of extreme importance from a biological viewpoint with ancient endemic livistonia palms dotting the landscape.  Both regions are home to Windjana and Bradshaw Art Sites.

Dinner tonight will be cooked on the BBQ or over an open fire.

Day 9  Mitchell Plateau / Falls

Spend the whole day exploring the Mitchell Plateau / Falls, a 3km walk, via Merten’s Falls from the car park into the falls.  Optional scenic heli chopper flights are available today. Suggest we walk in & chopper out.  Late afternoon return to vehicle and drive back to camp.

Day 10  Kalumburu

Depart camp for Kalumburu Aboriginal Community. Kalumburu has a rich history.  In 1932 it became a mission station after the failure of near by Pago; played a significant role during World War II; and the land was being taken for sheep and cattle stations and the cultivation of crops.

Today the local Aboriginal people who operate an extensive cattle cooperation and cater for visitors to the area, run the Community.  Surrounded by giant mango trees and coconut palms, close to King Edward River and Gorge Kalumburu is well worth a visit and will be a great part of your safari.

Day 11  Kalumburu

This morning we join our Aboriginal guide who will take you on a rock art tour, and a bush tucker walk.

Spend some time around the Kalumburu Community where you will have the opportunity to meet with members of the Community. You may wish to purchase authentic Aboriginal art direct from the artists or visit the Parish Museum.

Overnight: Camp - Winganjie (Blue Water), Kalumburu

Day 12   Mt Elizabeth Station

Depart Kalumburu after breakfast and travel via Gibb River Crossing ( Art sites ) to Mt Elizabeth Station.

Lunch today will be served en route.  Late afternoon arrival into Mt Elizabeth Station.  Time to meet Pat and Peter Lacy.

Dinner tonight will be cooked on the BBQ or over an open fire.

Day 13  Manning Gorge

After breakfast we collect our local guide to spend the morning exploring some of the Art sites at Mt Elizabeth. 

After lunch travel a short distance to Manning Gorge. Upon arrival set up camp and relax with a swim in the lower end of Manning Gorge, or hike into Manning Gorge.  Manning Gorge is an approximate 45 minute walk from the camp ground. Swim in delightful waterfalls and pools, also a great spot for bird watching. Your guide will also point out Aboriginal art in the region.

Dinner tonight will be cooked on the BBQ or over an open fire.

Day 14  Galvans Gorge - Bell Gorge

Continue west along the Gibb River Road, stop for another swim in the water hole at Galvans Gorge before heading to Bell Gorge. Bell Gorge is situated in the King Leopold Range National Park.

This afternoon is spent exploring Bell Gorge, ( off Silent Gorge Station ). Bell is known as one of the most spectacular gorges in the whole of the Kimberley. A 45 minute walk in to Bell Gorge is well worth it.

Day 15  Windjana Gorge - Broome

Depart camp for Windjana Gorge. Windjana Gorge is a National Park, regarded by geologists as one of the classic examples of world geology. The gorge is a picturesque, narrow canyon cut by the Lennard River through the Napier Range, which was once a coral reef. Trees in the gorge are mostly cadjeputs ( tropical paperbarks ) and river gums. Also common are native figs and fresh water mangrove.

This morning we spend time exploring the Windjana Gorge / Tunnel Creek area before departing for Broome.

Lunch will be served en route to Broome. Late afternoon arrival into Broome.
